A colorful and informative guide to the various student government organizations at RPI.

In May 2009, I was listening to Haris Khan, a colleague of mine within student government at the Rensselaer Union, proofread his draft of a simple Word document introducing the student government organizations, such as the Student Senate, Independent Council, and Executive Board. He had written this document as a guide to incoming first-year students looking to join one or more of the organizations. He asked me to proof it as well, and reading through it gave me a sudden inspiration: we had an opportunity to transform it into a fun, informative, and beautiful invitation to join RPI’s student government.

Over the following two weeks, I created the layout in Adobe InDesign and most of the graphics for the guide. In the process, I improved on past skills and explored color matching for layouts, margins and spacing, and typographic styles.

For text blocks and various parts of the layout, I used background images that resembled real objects.

Big, beautiful images of the Rensselaer Union, the building where RPI's student government offices are located, adorn the pages of the guide.

A big challenge in creating the guide was taking it from the convoluted Word doc draft to an easy-to-understand, simplified guide. We were able to get away with just 4 steps to the elections process.
